Oromo-Somali Event 2023

12 Nov, 2023 @ 2:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Revitalizing and strengthening relations between the Oromo and Somali communities in Minnesota

The Minnesota Institute of Horn of Africa Studies will host a community forum where members from the Oromo and Somali communities in Minnesota discuss historical connections, shared heritage, contemporary challenges, and common destiny of the two fraternal nations. The goal is to make common cause in revitalizing the organic relationships between the two communities and expanding opportunities for collaboration, mutual support, and engagement in joint projects.

Leadership Collaboration: Encouraging leaders from both communities to collaborate on joint initiatives, policies, and programs that benefit both groups and the wider society.

Mutual Support: Encouraging mutual support and solidarity during times of need. This could involve assistance during crises, offering help to new immigrants, or supporting community members in various aspects of life.

Collaborative Projects: Engaging in joint community projects, such as educational initiatives, health programs, or social support systems that benefit both the Somali and Oromo communities. This can help build mutual understanding and cooperation.

Cultural Events: Organizing joint cultural events, festivals, or gatherings that celebrate the traditions, language, and music of both the Somali and Oromo communities. These events serve as a platform for inter-community interactions, cultural exchanges and celebration of each other’s cultures.

Given the significance of the Somali and Oromo communities in Minnesota, encouraging various community organizations, advocacy groups, student associations, working on fostering these relationships is essential to advancing the goals of both communities in the diaspora and promoting cooperation, solidarity, and peace in the homeland and achieving sustainable peace and prosperity in the Horn of Africa.

The Minnesota Institute of Horn of Africa Studies will provide more detailed information on ongoing efforts to revitalize relations between the Somali and Oromo communities in Minnesota. The effort begins with the following event.
